Abstract

In Philippians, Paul expresses a range of emotions. By far his dominant emotion throughout this letter is joy. While all the emotions expressed here give glimpses into Paul's soul, it is his joy that best defines the epistle as a whole. The paradox of Paul the joyful prisoner is central to this epistle and it needs to be unravelled. He expresses joy in the most unlikely of circumstances. So what lies behind it? Is there a single, underlying cause or are there multiple causes for Paul's joy? In the eight references to Paul's joy can a pattern be detected?
