Justification in Jesus and Paul: Two Voices in Unison

Abstract

This article argues that Jesus and Paul did not have different gospel messages but rather, Paul's preaching of justification was based on Jesus' teaching. After critically reviewing the arguments used to drive a wedge between Jesus and Paul, the article examines Jesus' teaching about justification and righteousness contained in Matthew and Luke. Finally, the article briefly lists evidence that Paul's understanding of justification was consistent with Jesus attributing this to Paul's dependency on a prior formulation of the gospel, evident in his use of a traditional formula in Rom 3:28 and Gal 2:15-16.
