Abstract

In three places the apostle Paul tells us that neither circumcision
nor uncircumcision counts for anything. What is instructive is that in each place he goes on, after a contrastive but to tell us what does count, and in each place his expression of what counts is formulated differently: in 1 Corinthians 7:19 it is ‘obeying the commandments of God, in Galatians 5:6 it is faith energised by love, while in Galatians 6:15 it is a new creation.
