Early Christian Understandings of the 'Abomination that Causes Desolation'

Abstract

In this article, Daryn Graham explores the earliest Christian understandings of the 'Abomination that Causes Desolation', as prophesied by Daniel, and later, Jesus. In doing so the Gospel evidence is examined, and other historical sources are also treated, as evidence of early Christian conceptions, experiences and responses to its prophetic fulfilment in AD70. The Pella tradition is analysed, as well as Late Antiquity writings which record both it, and their own interpretations of the 'Abomination' and its 'Desolation'. In doing so Graham finds that early Christian understandings were varied, yet often found a measure of consensus among many. Responses also varied, although only the Pella tradition survives in any detail regarding them.
